The story: Pickleball people, this one’s for you. The Town of Arlington filed a construction permit on Thursday, Oct. 22, for its Arlington Tennis Center expansion, Action News 5 reported. Price tag: more than $1.7 million.
Where: The Tennis Center at Memphis-Arlington Road and Milton Wilson Road. It opened in 2019. The new courts go on the land originally saved for the center’s second phase.
What’s coming: According to the town:
- 12 new pickleball courts
- 2 new tennis courts
- A central shade structure (yes, shade)
- More parking and a second driveway
- A maintenance building with a hitting wall
Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be tennis? It was. The original Phase 2 plan called for more tennis courts. The town updated the design to add dedicated pickleball courts “to better meet the growing interest in the sport and the recreational needs of our community.”
Who can play: Everyone. The town says all the new courts will be open to the public for recreational use.
Who’s building it: ViktorHall Construction of Memphis, per Action News 5. The permit also covers a storage building.
How we got here: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the construction contract in early August, the town said. Then on Oct. 5, the board unanimously voted to create an assigned fund to keep the expansion money in its own bucket.
When can I play? TBD. The town hasn’t confirmed a completion date. It says it will share updates as work gets underway.
